Top 5 restaurants in Saariselkä, Lapland
We’ve been based in Saariselkä for 7 years, we always think food is an important part of traveling and experiencing new cultures. Although Finland isn’t known for its cuisine it’s still an amazing experience to try whilst in Lapland. Here are our recommendations for local places to try:
Ravintola Pirkon Pirtti - This restaurant is known for its local Lappish cuisine and cozy atmosphere. You can try traditional dishes like reindeer and salmon in a warm and welcoming setting. It’s worth booking a table as it does get busy.
Kaunis’ Restaurant - With arguably one of the best views in Saariselkä, the restaurant Kaunis is great for treating yourself. It’s a mix of modern cuisine and traditional Lappish dishes with a lot of the ingredients being sourced locally. It’s also great to visit for a coffee or beer as the sun is setting over the surrounding wilderness.
Rakka - This is a centrally located restaurant with a good varied menu. It’s perfect for groups, and always really friendly service. Good for veggies too.
Laanilan Kievari - Situated about 10 kilometers from Saariselkä, this remote restaurant is a great option if you're looking for a more authentic Lappish experience. They serve traditional dishes and often cook them beside the open fire. The service is always amazing and it’s always a great evening.
Kieppi Saariselkä: If you want easy, quick, and simple then this restaurant (which is part of the Santa's Hotel Tunturi) offers a variety of dishes, pizza, burgers, etc. Good for groups, and an easy casual dining experience.
The best bar…
Panimo Bar - Warm up after a day snowshoeing, or skiing with a warm cup of hot chocolate and mintuu in Panimo. Warm, welcoming atmosphere full of locals and tourists. If you time it well there is often a band playing, or if you time it badly you find out songs the Finns love to sing in Karaoke (they’re not always the most upbeat) but it’s quite the experience!
Wild cooking experience Saariselka
The best food is in Saariselka though will be when our Wilderness chef William Hamer joins us for a week of adventure and incredible food cooked on the open fire.
